What’s with the British love affair with pies anyway? Like everything else, we can only assume that for all we know about pies, there’s also a secret history.
Did the Bronte sisters have pie-eating contests? Is Stonehenge shaped like a pie for a reason best known to the ancients?
We also have it on good authority that The Red Arrows fly in perfect symmetry because their cockpits are rammed with pies and that Margaret Thatcher had pies to weigh down her handbag on visits to the north.
The real history of the pie
Here are some fun pie facts on the real history of the pie that you might want to pass on to some friends and relatives on the phone or on zoom when the conversation dries up.
As well as noses and spas, the Romans were pie-oneers by producing the first meat filling encased in pastry made from flour and oil.
And get this all you Tupperware fans, piecrusts served the same purpose as plastic by preserving the food and were often so tough that they had to be discarded. This was a handy way of preserving meat for long sea voyages - and it didn’t choke turtles.
Pie making in Tudor times was a competitive business. Desperate to please their masters with evermore elaborate concoctions, some chefs would even have birds fly out of them. Hence ‘four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie’ and don’t get us started on Little Jack Horner.
